Jai Jagannath! The Shri Jagannath Temple of Greater Chicago joyfully invites all devotees, families, and friends to celebrate the sacred Rath Yatra 2026 on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 12:00 PM, at 2295 Church Rd, Aurora, IL 60502. Come be part of a day of devotion, worship, and community as we honor Mahaprabhu Jagannath together.
The Origins
Rath Yatra — the world-renowned “Festival of Chariots” — is one of the oldest and most cherished Hindu festivals, tracing its roots to the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, with a recorded history spanning many centuries. It commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, together with His siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, as They travel from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple aboard three towering, hand-built wooden chariots.
The journey symbolizes the Lord stepping out of His sanctum to bless every devotee, regardless of caste or creed, a living expression of universal love and equality. Those who pull the sacred ropes, or simply catch darshan of the Lord in motion, are believed to carry home His grace.
“Once a year, the Lord leaves His sanctum and comes to the street — so that every devotee, however humble, may have His darshan.”
Our Tradition
For many years, the Shri Jagannath Temple of Greater Chicago has proudly carried this sacred tradition forward, bringing the spirit of Puri’s Rath Yatra to our local community. What began as a small gathering of devotees has grown into a cherished annual celebration, uniting families across the Greater Chicago area in shared faith and festivity strengthening our community bonds and keeping our cultural and spiritual heritage alive for generations to come.
